'Hero' officer staged suicide, embezzled from youth program

ROUND LAKE BEACH, Ill. — A police officer who was lauded as a hero after his fatal shooting triggered an intense and costly manhunt in fact committed suicide, carefully staging his death because he was about to be exposed as a thief, authorities said Wednesday.

Cameron Carlson, a public health major, checked his bank account on his phone and discovered he was a victim of fraud last June. Carlson described it as a huge inconvenience: he had to call and visit his bank and get new cards for all his accounts. He suspects the fraud originated online.

BYU Professors Develop New System to Detect Fraud

No business wants to become a victim of fraud. A team of BYU Professors say they've developed a system where businesses can use their own financial statements to prevent things that could lead to bankruptcy. Information Systems Professor Anthony Vance was one of four professors to work on this system and he says that publicly available information plays a major role in detecting fraud.
