Due to the majority of colleges that participate in “Spring Break,” BYU students find themselves envious of other students around the country. College students claim that “Spring Break” gives students a much needed break from school. Just because class stops doesn’t mean that the workload stops. Students still carry the burden of homework, papers and projects due when they return from “Spring Break”. This pseudo vacation that other schools experience pales in comparison to the pure joy BYU students feel as they complete the semester up to two weeks earlier.

We all stress. This stress can be hammered in a student’s brain and attack them, diverting them from a wholesome learning experience.

If ever a sincere and deeply-felt frustration, even a fiery and righteous indignation, with the condition and direction of the United States, our “city upon a hill,' happens to coincide with the appearance of an arrogant, vulgar, foolish, ridiculous, hateful, and fearful megalomaniac who will stroke the nation’s vanity, beware.

To believe that socialism has never worked ignores how socialistic the United States actually is. The United States has a lot of socialistic policies and programs that everyone would be outraged if they were taken away. One of the policies is that the government will give assistance to anyone who suffers from major disabilities. My cousin, who has Down syndrome, receives aid from a socialistic program. He even has Medicaid which is a socialistic program. If we were only a country that practiced capitalism, he wouldn’t receive any help and be expected to fend for himself if his family didn’t take care of him. My grandpa, who recently passed away, received Social Security for years after he retired. His health deteriorated to a point when he could only walk with a walker. Capitalism does not support the elderly. In a purely capitalistic system the elderly would be left to fend for themselves or be taken care of by their family. Socialism has been a large part of the United States, and it are the most successful country in the world. Socialism has worked and can work.

If the creation of money out of thin air (known as quantitative easing) were really more effective than harmful, the U.S. government would do it all the time — not just in a recession. It merely masks a lack of growth, and the more we do it the more rampant the inflation we will have. (This inflation has not happened yet, but that’s because there is a lag factor.) Things will be better in the long run if we end quantitative easing. Thus, we should elect Ted Cruz for President.

In my position as a custodial supervisor I have had occasion to see a few starving students. I look at some students as pioneers who are willing to sacrifice all to be able to come to BYU, including food. However, we as fellow wanderers in this life should not allow this to happen.

Let’s face it; college students are poor. Many students find ways to squeeze the amount of what they have left for rent or food. Furthermore, some still have trouble understanding interest, loan terms and the importance of paying credit cards on time. According to U.S. News, 56 percent of college students between ages 18 and 24 have four or more credit cards, with an average balance of over $3,000. Students must learn financial literacy.

When I found out that BYU had a gymnastics gymnasium on campus, I was ecstatic. I have been a gymnast for over half my life and competed for my high school team. I was excited for the opportunity to continue one of my passions. However, that opportunity never came. After talking to one of the STAC coaches during freshman orientation, I discovered that the gym only allows access to members of the collegiate gymnastics team or scheduled gymnastics class. When I tried to sign up for the class, it was full in both fall and winter semesters with hefty waitlists. Though the gymnastics gym is needed for the competing team and credit class, there is a way to provide more access to the gym that will accommodate the gymnastics class, collegiate team, and student body of BYU.

In the South, there is a certain guide upon which all relationships are built. What ever happened to holding the door for a woman? How did the classical “ma’am” become lost, only to be replaced by society’s “bae”? Boys, if you want to get off your couch this Friday night and spend it with someone else other than your mother, it is time for you to take notes.

I love working out. I like to take care of my body and live a healthy lifestyle. BYU does a pretty good job at promoting that by having healthy food options on campus and numerous intramural activities for students to participate in. The school unfortunately, falls short in one aspect, the student gym.

A letter entitled “Having a beard is a choice” was recently published in these pages which made some specious arguments. For example, the letter read, “Everybody who goes to BYU signs the Honor Code. They have every opportunity to read through all of the restrictions and then agree to them. Complaining about the beard rule is like signing a contract and then afterwards complaining that the contract isn’t fair.”

I’m a Utah fan and I go to BYU. Just wanted to throw that out there. But I have to say I am extremely disappointed at the University of Utah’s decision to cancel the 2016-2017 men’s basketball game against BYU.

Spring exercise

April 20, 2015 12:00 AM
Spring is approaching, which means warm weather. Spring is the time when flowers blossom and the start of a new beginning. It can be a fresh start for us as well. Colder weather discourages exercise, because you don’t want to be outside in the cold and it can be cramped and stuffy in the gym. It is no longer cold outside, and after being inside all winter it is time to stretch our legs and start to exercise again.

Self-policing BYU parking

Offensive tweeting

April 20, 2015 12:00 AM
Some of you may have seen the tweet from the BYU football coach Mark Atuaia this weekend which read, “For those who oppose — go see your stake president then find me and oppose those beloved men in front of me and witness how I sin #realtalk.” What a great example of Christlike behavior. Yes, let's go beat up people who disagree with the church.
