Comfortable test-taking

April 21, 2015 12:00 AM
Here at Brigham Young University there are a lot of rules put into place through the Honor Code. There are rules for cheating, visiting hours, grooming and clothing. For most of these rules it’s up to the students to always make sure they’re upholding their honor, except for when it comes to the humanities testing center. It’s become a rule that students are not allowed to wear leggings as pants. In the Honor Code statement it says, “Clothing is inappropriate when it is sleeveless, strapless, backless, or revealing; has slits above the knee; or is form fitting.' Nowhere in the Honor Code does it actually state that leggings are not allowed. Leggings are no tighter than some jeans that a lot of girls are wearing. When you go in to take a test some of the workers will turn you away for wearing leggings. What about wanting to be comfortable while taking a test? It’s not fair that girls aren’t allowed to wear leggings because they’re “too much of a distraction for the guys.” Girls dress modestly out of respect for themselves and not solely because of other people. It’s time to think about whether preventing leggings is really doing anything beneficial.

Offensive tweeting

April 20, 2015 12:00 AM
Some of you may have seen the tweet from the BYU football coach Mark Atuaia this weekend which read, “For those who oppose — go see your stake president then find me and oppose those beloved men in front of me and witness how I sin #realtalk.” What a great example of Christlike behavior. Yes, let's go beat up people who disagree with the church.

Spring exercise

April 20, 2015 12:00 AM
Spring is approaching, which means warm weather. Spring is the time when flowers blossom and the start of a new beginning. It can be a fresh start for us as well. Colder weather discourages exercise, because you don’t want to be outside in the cold and it can be cramped and stuffy in the gym. It is no longer cold outside, and after being inside all winter it is time to stretch our legs and start to exercise again.

Self-policing BYU parking

April 20, 2015 12:00 AM
I’m a grad student, and I’m frustrated with how many undergrads park in grad student parking or faculty parking and the parking police don’t come by frequently enough to ticket the students.

Catfish criticisms

March 31, 2015 12:00 AM
I have a few opinions about the recent articles published on the topic of “catfishing.” While I understand completely that this topic is 'hot' among readers and gives us an interesting subject, I think it is completely unprofessional the way that Hilary Hayes and The Universe have approached this specific situation.

Don't rate righteousness

March 31, 2015 12:00 AM
A recent opinion piece criticizes individuals who watch R-rated movies, claiming that such entertainment is unequivocally offensive to the Holy Ghost and Jesus Christ. While caution should be exercised in making our entertainment choices, the Church has not drawn any such line in the sand, and choosing to do so risks becoming pharisaical. Any individual can make such a choice for themselves, but using that personal decision as a barometer of others’ righteousness is completely inappropriate.

Distracted pedestrians

March 31, 2015 12:00 AM
I barely saw you jogging last night with your headphones in, wearing dark clothes. I almost hit you this morning as you hurried across the street to class, with your head down, checking your phone. I am aware of you and watching out for your safety, but are you?

Victimization of villians

March 17, 2015 12:00 AM
As of late my attention has been drawn to a new, and disgusting, trend formulating in today’s virtual and realistic society. This tendency among young adults, especially at BYU, is a phenomenon occurring when a sexual assault is analyzed by the culprit and its onlookers, concluding that the offense was due to the victim’s body language, speech, or clothing.

Simple solar solution

March 17, 2015 12:00 AM
Throat burning or stomach queasy? These are typical symptoms of Utahns during this time of year. Across the dreary valley, a few mountain peaks triumph over the thick morning haze. Chemicals of the ozone, which protect the earth, have been cycling in our respiratory system. From daily commuter to the children at recess, all are affected. Utah has been diagnosed. It is suffering from an illness of excessive poor air quality and increasing electrical bills. This gradual decline can be reversed through the implementing of solar panels to create a no-pollution solution.

True equality

March 10, 2015 12:00 AM
People typically agree that discrimination is bad, but what if it isn’t called discrimination? Preferential treatment gives benefits to people of certain minorities. Sounds like discrimination to me. Yet preferential treatment is everywhere, and many are in favor of it. Why? Because these special privileges are given to minorities in hopes of fixing past pains. This new reverse discrimination is still discrimination.

Parking problems

March 10, 2015 12:00 AM
“Enter to learn, go forth to serve” These words have inspired professor and pupil alike on the lifelong journey of education and self-improvement. They promise a worthwhile education and the skills to be a valuable contribution to the workplace. The only obstacle is the command “enter to learn.” Some of you reading this may have never had to park a car here, but I believe I speak for all students who commute when I say that for us, it’s huge. Picture a bunch of big metal vultures following pedestrians around the parking lot hoping their prey will enter a vehicle and escape, leaving the space vacant. It’s a jungle out there.

Feminism: Virtue or vice?

March 03, 2015 12:00 AM
There are many tensions and uprisings within the LDS Church resulting from misunderstandings about women and the priesthood. The contentious atmosphere found within the Church will only disappear as women internalize Church doctrine and diligently seek answers from God.

Stop spiritual gold-digging

February 24, 2015 12:00 AM
Recently, there has been a shift in standards, a toxic trend sweeping across BYU campus. An honorable mission is no longer sufficient; the standard has been raised to include, “What leadership positions did you hold?” This offensive development degrades noble men, valiant and true in the gospel. It must be abolished!

Obama on ISIS: Encourages more education

February 19, 2015 12:00 AM
President Barack Obama addressed the nation Feb. 18 on issues regarding ISIS. Obama explained that the United States will not go to war with Islam but stated that 'we are at war with people who have perverted Islam.' He said that specific people, not religion, are to blame for violent terrorist acts.
