November 19, 2012 12:00 AM
Modest good news for college students: An annual survey predicts employers will increase hiring of new 4-year college graduates about 5 percent in the coming year. Demand for graduates with associate's degrees is expected to increase more sharply — by about 30 percent compared to last year's survey— while MBA hiring appears headed for an unexpected decline.

BYU tuition increase

October 23, 2012 12:00 AM
Last week, BYU administration announced that tuition would raise starting fall semester 2013. According to a press release by the university, “Brigham Young University will implement a three-percent increase across all tuition categories.” That calculates to an increase of 70 dollars per semester for full time LDS students. While it may mean that students will be paying more for their education, BYU is still one of the best buys for private universities in the nation.

I am the 47 percent

September 21, 2012 12:00 AM
When I was in high school, a few friends and I went to our school board meeting to speak up about an important issue. One of the issues on the agenda was how much money the school board would spend on the students. We wanted the best for our schools and thought money was the answer, so we confidently asked the board members 'fund to the cap.'

Louis L'Amour became famous for his plethora of western novels. He was the John Wayne of paperbacks. However, in my life, he's known for his non-fiction rather than fiction. Right before his death in 1988, L'Amour penned his life history, titled 'Education of a Wandering Man.' As the title suggests, the memoir chronicles L'Amour's nontraditional education.

The Fourth of July is, in my opinion, the quintessential summer event. You have the best of summer combined into one event: festivals, parades, watermelon, picnics, hamburgers, sparklers and — of course — fireworks.
