Video of the Day: Skier nearly misses avalanche
A skier triggered an avalanche at Dutch Draw, Conehead in Park City on Feb. 17. The video shows two skiers coursing down the slope. A third skier narrowly escaped the avalanche that had broken out. According to the Utah Avalanche Center, new snow in the area contributed to the 50-foot-wide soft slab avalanche.

Professionals, enthusiasts caution students about avalanche danger
Massive snow-covered mountains loom over campus, so close they reflect off the glass front of the Joseph F. Smith Building. Students play a figurative game of Russian roulette every time they venture into the mountains during the winter.

When an avalanche hits the slopes, let the dogs out
In this 2015 photo provided by Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows, dog supervisor Craig Noble puts his border collie Wylee through some paces on the mountain in Olympic Valley, Calif. Noble says dogs are better than any beacon or echo, as a good dog can check part of an avalanche grid in five or 10 minutes, the same time it would take 50 people hours to scour the same area.
