Let's talk like kids again

October 30, 2012 12:00 AM
As a senior in high school, I had four AP classes, was the sports editor of my school newspaper, co-captain of the tennis team, a member of the National Honor Society and tutored every Friday afternoon. When I wasn't drowning in schoolwork, filling out college and scholarship applications or playing tennis, I had a boyfriend whom I just knew I was going to marry.

Making your OWN decisions

October 10, 2012 12:00 AM
It's that time of year when decisions are assaulting us from all sides. Some are bigger than others, like career paths, job opportunities, or whether or not to buy that awesome electric griddle at Smith's. (Which, by the way, I highly recommend, best investment ever.)

'The chosen generation'

October 07, 2012 12:00 AM
I always knew deep down inside that I would serve a mission even before I reached the required age of 21. Even though I might not have been willing to admit to myself that I was destined to serve a mission, waiting for my time to serve was like waiting for the inevitable -- and nobody really likes waiting.

Prejudice: the act of not understanding one another

September 20, 2012 12:00 AM
Listening to the Jewish shopkeeper go on and on about his dislike of the Palestinians in Jerusalem, I wondered why this man had so much hatred in his heart. What kind of personal experience had led this man to have such strong opposing views against the people that live just miles from his home? The conflict has existed for centuries. Since before the time of Christ, the Jews and the Palestinians have been fighting.

Defining Mormonism for the media

September 19, 2012 12:00 AM
My husband has one arm. Yep, just one. It's not everyday you see a guy with one arm, an empty sleeve dangling, walking around. People stare at us when we go out. There's pointing and whispering whenever we are in public. It bothered me, but it didn't faze my husband.

Man on the Street: What's your reaction to the NCAA sanctions against Penn State?

July 30, 2012 12:00 AM
'I think that morality is the most important characteristic in modern society and the most lacking, but I'm not sure to what degree Paterno is responsible for Sandusky's actions. ... I think that as amateur athletics become more in the spotlight they undergo much greater scrutiny, and they are held to a much higher standard.'

In response to last weeks viewpoint “Balancing feminism” (7/10): Having it all means that I get to utilize all of my passions. But some of them collide, so they take turns.

Man on the street: Pioneer Day

July 16, 2012 12:00 AM
'I'm related to Martin Harris. That's all I know, but I'm very proud of it. The Book of Mormon's shorter because of me — well, my family. You can stand closer to boys because of me.'

Viewpoint: Modern Pioneers

July 16, 2012 12:00 AM
I come from a split, but complimentary, background. My father comes from hearty pioneer stock dating back to Kirtland days. Those ancestors walked with early Mormon leaders from Kirtland to Missouri to Nauvoo before eventually crossing the plains to the Salt Lake Valley. That heritage is rich and one I’m immensely proud of.

Sound off: Divisive politics

June 18, 2012 12:00 AM
Earlier this month, the Pew Research Center published the results of an on-going survey which now shows politics divide Americans more than region, gender or age. In response to the recent viewpoint, what would you say is the cause of this division? Have you noticed this in your personal life?

Man on the street: Why is it so easy to be judgmental?

June 05, 2012 12:00 AM
“I feel like people are pretty good. I think sometimes you get a lot of judging just because it’s kind of a competition. I’ve just heard a lot of girls say, ‘Oh, her skirt’s way too short’ and stuff. So, clothing-wise people get judged on a lot. We each have our own criteria of what we should be living, so we take our standards and apply them to other people.

Sound Off: Internet civility

May 25, 2012 12:00 AM
Internet forums and comment threads can bring out the worst in us. We say things online we would never say in person.
