DEMOCRATIC STANCE BETTER

As a recent graduate of Utah State University and also an alumnus of Weber State University, I would like to help clarify a misconception (?Tired of paying for sports,? Sept. 13) about the cost of athletics at state-run schools. Every semester I attended at USU and WSU, I paid approximately $250 in student fees - in addition to tuition. A portion of the student fees was allocated to fund the athletic department. Every student was required to pay the fees, whether they attended athletic events or not.

The general manager of BYU NewsNet, James Kelly, has been put on a 3-week paid administrative leave after a former NewsNet employee filed an informal complaint against him.

In an effort to continue promoting diverse reporting, The Daily Universe is accepting applications from students interested in reporting for the Winter Semester Cub Desk.

U.S. troops arrested an Iraqi rebel leader and 78 others in a raid Tuesday near a town north of Baghdad. Germany and France agree to ease Baghdad's huge debt burden. Israel on Tuesday barred Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat from Christmas celebrations in Bethlehem for a third straight year. Senator Orrin Hatch heard criticism for his support of a plan to prepare for nuclear weapons testing in the West.

American foces captured a bearded Saddam Hussein, hiding in a hole in a farmhouse near his hometown of Tikrit. President Bush said that Hussein will be put on public trial for his crimes against the Iraqi people. Senator John Breaux announced he will not run for re-election next year. Breaux becomes the fifth southern Democrat in the Senate to step down. Utah Governor Olene Walker proposed an $8 billion state budget that would increase money for public schools by rerouting funds from roads and water subsidies.

Federal officials announced Thursday that the flu has hit hard in 24 states. Housing regulations have remained unchanged for over thirty years, but soon BYU approved off-campus housing regulations will change. Utah colleges and universities would see a four percent funding increase under a proposal made to the Board of Regents Thursday by Gov. Olene Walker. The Dow Jones industrials closed above 10,000 Thursday, a milestone not seen in 18 months.
