BYU gymnasts compete in second round of NCAA regionals
Four BYU gymnasts competed in the second round of NCAA regionals Thursday evening in Los Angeles. Anyssa Alvarado, Elease Rollins, Sydney Benson, and Kylie Eaquinto were the individuals who qualified to compete at Pauley Pavilion.
The first rotation of the night was the uneven bars. Senior and captain, Anyssa Alvarado was the first of the night on the apparatus. Alvarado has been the beam specialist three times this season and usually flys through bars with no problem. Unfortunately, Alvarado fell on the apparatus leaving her with a score of 9.325.
Next up, MRGC Freshman of the Year, Kylie Eaquinto on vault. The Orem native has not scored less than a 9.800 on this apparatus so far this season. Expecting nothing less, Eaquinto rounded her score to a 9.800 to close out her freshman season.
Sydney Benson also competed alongside Eaquinto in vault. Benson scored a 9.900 on the apparatus, tying her career high. The two time MRGC vault specialist scored a 9.900 two other times earlier this season.
The “beam queen” Elease Rollins scored a 9.800 on the apparatus. Rollins is a 2022 Balance Beam All-American, 2023 MRGC Beam Specialist of the Year, and was the beam specialist four times this season. Rollins ended the night for the Cougars.
No. 4 UCLA and No. 14 Missouri advance to Saturday’s regional final as they take on No. 5 Utah and No. 27 Washington.
