BYU men’s track and field set records, personal bests in Lubbock and Boston

The men’s track and field team was split up this weekend, as the distance runners traveled to Boston to compete in the David Hemery Valentine Invitational while the rest of the squad was in Texas for the Jarvis Scott Open.

The men did not begin competition in Boston until Saturday, but had no trouble getting off to a quick start.

Ryan Cibart placed 14th in the Men’s 800 M, setting a personal best and placing 7th all-time at BYU with a 1:49.01.

On day two of the invitational, Casey Clinger ran a 3:57.13 mile. This was two seconds better than his outdoor personal best and now ranks 21st all-time on the BYU timed mile leaderboard.

Josh Taylor opened BYU’s account on day 1, finishing 2nd in the 400 meter. His time (46.25) was a personal best and is tied for the best all-time 400 meter at BYU. This comes right after he came within 0.34 seconds of beating the record last week at the Razorback Invitational.

Trey Jackson finished right behind Taylor in 3rd, also setting a PR and placing his name in the record books at number 2 all-time for BYU. Spencer Carlie and Eli Hazlett also finished 1st in their own heats. Sprints coach Kyle Grossarth credited offseason training for the runners’ performances.

“The entire sprints group has really been putting in the work since we started back in the fall and they are seeing the results from that,” coach Grossarth told reporters post-event.

Sophomore Danny Bryant finished 1st in section B of the weight throw, tossing 18.44m/60-6, a new personal best. A personal best was also set by Treyton Anderson in the 200 meter dash. He ran alongside fellow Cougar, Abram Schaap, who placed 5th overall.

Anderson advanced to the prelims for the 60 meter dash in the qualifying circuit, running a 8.31 on day 1 of the meet. He would come in 20th the next day, running an 8.31.

In the pole vault, Caleb Witsken once again led the team as he placed 2nd overall, jumping a 5.56m/18-3. Witsken’s teammates Nathan Burnett and Dallin Thorton tied for fourth in the event, each scoring a 5.21m/17-1.

To cap off the meet for the men, Eli Hazlett, Trey Jackson, Spencer Carlile, and Josh Taylor set a new school record in the 4×400 meter relay. The squad ran the event in 3:05.73. BYU also had Schaap, Dallin Draper, Jared Davis, and Jace Jensen run in the relay, placing 6th.
