BYU women’s golf finishes 10th in final 2023 tournament

BYU women’s golf finished 10th at the Hurricane Invitational Tuesday. The Cougars shot a score of 881 which put the team 7-over-par.

This match was about keeping cool and consistent while trying to match Miami. The Hurricanes were at home and it showed. They posted the best round of the match, in rounds one and two scoring 78. Round three they were edged out by Colorado State, but Miami still finished second for the round.

The effort to keep up with the Hurricanes at home was not a strong suit for BYU. Through round one BYU would finish second to last shooting a 297.

In round two, the Cougars made a push to improve their score by eight points from what it was in the initial round. BYU was unique in round two as nearly every team at the event saw their scores dip, while they shot even better. The Cougars were one of three teams in round two to better their score by more than two strokes.

Unfortunately, the hot streak would last just one round for BYU. A repeat of their round two performance would have tied for fifth in round three. The consistency just wasn’t there as BYU posted a 295, which was the second to last score for the round.

That eight point improvement BYU made up between round one and round two, was good enough to push the Cougars to 10th instead of 11th.

Individually, BYU was led by Freshman Lily Denunzio who posted a final score of 217 and tied for 26th. She also showed up in this theme of maintaining consistency.

Lily posted a 73 in round one, matched that in round two and finished with a 71 in the final round. It wasn’t the most dynamic performance, but it was good enough to move up eight spots from start to end as those around Denunzio failed to match her consistency.

While a 10th place team performance isn’t what the Cougars want or expect from themselves, it is proof that they have the ability to compete at a high level.

This tournament marks the Cougars’ last tournament of 2023 until the season picks back up in February.

Their next event will be back in Florida on Feb. 5 at the FAU Paradise Invitational.
