How confident are BYU fans going into Big 12 play?

The Cougars have had an interesting start to the season, to say the least. Cougars fans on social media have been quite up and down over the season’s first two games.

Starting the season 2-0, there are still many question marks. This Saturday versus the Razorbacks should answer many Cougars fan’s questions.

With all of these questions or concerns, I decided to ask Cougar fans their expectations going into Big-12 play next week.

I contacted dozens of Cougar fans throughout the country via social media, and here are a few responses from them.

Atlanta native Grant Farley said, “I think most fans are concerned with how BYU’s depth holds up against a 10 straight week, Power 5 schedule. There is no question BYU can play against Power-5 teams and win, they have shown that throughout over a decade in Independence. How will those 1st and 2nd string players hold up as they aspire for a conference championship? Depth is my concern.”

Since 2021, BYU is 8-4 against Power-5 opponents (including Notre Dame). They have shown they are more than capable of being competitive in the big leagues.

Injuries last season held the Cougars back from reaching their full potential on both sides of the ball.

Southeast Idaho native Hunter Jacobsen said, “They are going to have a difficult time playing against the top Big-12 schools like Texas and Oklahoma. But I think they’ll handle the middle of the pack and lower tier Big-12 teams with ease.”

That is an interesting take from a Cougar fan after seeing Texas handle Alabama last weekend in Tuscaloosa.

Phoenix native Jordan Matson said, “I’m super pumped for it. I know people think they won’t have a winning season or they won’t be as successful as the last few years but I don’t believe it. I’m all in on this defense and expect BYU to at least keep every game close. I am calling it right now that they’ll upset either Texas or Oklahoma.”

After reading through all the messages from Cougar Nation, the vast majority of them were highly optimistic about their expectations for BYU football going into Big-12 play.

BYU opens Big-12 play against the Kansas Jayhawks on ESPN at 3:30 ET. Kansas defeated Big-10 opponent Illinois 34-23 on ESPN last Friday behind an awe-inspiring performance from preseason All-Big-12 quarterback Jalon Daniels.

It should be an entertaining matchup between the Cougars and Jayhawks in Lawrence.
