Since the beginning of existence, mankind has taken extraordinary qualities and assigned them to diverse groups of men and women in writing and imagination. They serve as saviors, inspirational figures and relatable life lessons.

Readers' Forum: Comparison can kill

June 20, 2023 12:00 AM
I am an avid VSCO girl. I love the low-key nature of being able to unload my camera roll favorites without a care of who might see. I appreciate the opportunity to connect with others and share bits of my life through social media apps like Instagram. What I have come to find through my high school and university years, is that as much as social media can be a fun and creative space, it can also be a place of comparison and negativity.

Readers' Forum: Tired and devastated, but not without hope

June 06, 2023 12:00 AM
I still remember my first lockdown drill. I was in Mrs. Ibarra’s classroom in the blue wing of my elementary school. The blue on most days was a happy, comforting color, but that day in the dark it felt more sinister and scary. My classmates and I huddled silently in the corner as Mrs. Ibarra piled a mound of desks in front of the door. Earlier that day, she told us that in the event of a real shooting, we were to do everything we could to protect ourselves. She pointed out the window at the undeveloped plot of land behind our school — a wavy wheat field typical of Kansas summers.

Readers' Forum: Taking medical advice from America's greatest pill pushers, the FDA

May 30, 2023 12:00 AM
What would happen if what we were always told is best for us, actually wasn’t? The voices with the biggest influence in medicine repeatedly feed us the idea that medication in tiny capsules is the cure to every problem. We never question it because we trust that they have our best interest in mind. However, like most things in life, it's more about the paycheck at the end of the day than anything else. We should be doing our own research and discovering what’s best for our bodies if we really have our own best interests in mind.

'Be not ashamed' is a phrase I have heard since my primary days, when shame was not even something I could comprehend. It is a phrase I have repeated, oft and confidently.

Did you know that 80% of students work while in college, according to the Georgetown University Center on Education and the Workforce? Not only that, they also found that tuition and fees at four-year public colleges and universities have risen 19 times faster than average family incomes since 1980. Families are failing to keep up with the finances, so naturally, many students are forced to work in order to receive an education.

As you drive along your typical route to work on a Monday morning, you may notice the never-ending line at the Starbucks drive-thru, at least if you live in any state other than Utah.

We go to school every day, for years on end, with the intent of receiving an education. We have an innate desire to learn. But, are the educational systems really teaching us what we need to know?

Desperate times call for desperate measures. These past three weeks so evidently emulated this mantra. While America is increasingly affected by the COVID-19, people react in two different ways: selfishly or selflessly.

According to Abraham Lincoln, “A house divided against itself cannot stand.” Satan knows that and is trying so hard to divide us. So we should ask ourselves, “What is causing the division between people today?” There is one answer that stands out from among the rest: Media.

BYU is and should be one of the greatest universities in the world. Developing faithful disciples of Jesus Christ and His gospel should be BYU’s top priority. However, the manner of how a grave miscommunication between our university and CES happened should bring everyone to a pause.

The movement for universal ideological acceptance has become strong. However, many Americans still fear beliefs different than their own. This has caused many public schools to adopt secularism in order to avoid offending anyone, closing the conversation between differing beliefs. Others see and recognize the inherent problem, hence Trump’s push for prayer in schools. As BYU students, we must understand these issues as we “enter to learn.'

Thirty seconds — a seemingly insignificant amount of time, but you’d be surprised what can happen in just a little bit of extra time. You can set a goal, stretch, clean off your desk, drink a glass of water or text a friend. In August of last year, 26 people were shot and nine were killed in just 30 seconds in Dayton, Ohio, before the suspect was taken down by police. Thirty seconds was all it took.

Though it is admirable that BYU is attempting to reconcile religion and evolution in a way that students can effectively learn more about both, this attempt at reconciliation is, like all other attempts, ultimately doomed.

Every day, BYU students choose to poison the Earth that God selflessly gave us. We accept mistreatment of the Earth by carelessly placing plastics into a system that leaves them stranded in dumps or watery graves. Once in their resting places, plastics take at least 1,000 years to finally disintegrate. We know plastics can be recycled, yet as BYU students, we somehow rationalize placing plastics in a location where they become destructive.

I read the report describing a session at Women's Conference titled 'Understanding the LGBTQ and SSA Community: Included in Our Circle of Love.” I appreciate the work that presenters Blake Fisher and Deb Hutchins are doing here at BYU to help those who experience same-gender attraction and gender dysphoria feel more at peace and welcome. I agree with Blake's statement that we should have faith in Christ, not faith in outcomes. I think his statement, 'The way to find peace and joy is not in abandoning, it’s not in obsessing, but it’s in holding both (your faith and sexuality)' can be helpful for many.
