BYU at 150: The university prophets have foretold

April 16, 2024 12:00 AM
The first song I ever knew all the words to was the BYU Fight Song. I would ask my mom to sing it to me before I went to bed at night. My earliest memories were of watching football games, walking campus, and planning my future as a BYU cougar.

Readers' Forum: The silent danger of silencing books

March 05, 2024 12:00 AM
'Why books (...) hated and feared? They show the pores of the face of life.' (Bradbury 82). The famous line from Ray Bradbury’s book “Fahrenheit 451”, outlines the reasoning behind the mass burning of books in a dystopian world. Bradbury’s novel explores the government’s fear of a world of individual thoughts and opinions, to such an extent that it leads to the destruction of the world’s history and knowledge. A dystopian world that may not be far from our own if we don’t take action.

Readers' Forum: Becoming like Batman

June 27, 2023 12:00 AM
Since the beginning of existence, mankind has taken extraordinary qualities and assigned them to diverse groups of men and women in writing and imagination. They serve as saviors, inspirational figures and relatable life lessons.

Readers' Forum: Comparison can kill

June 20, 2023 12:00 AM
I am an avid VSCO girl. I love the low-key nature of being able to unload my camera roll favorites without a care of who might see. I appreciate the opportunity to connect with others and share bits of my life through social media apps like Instagram. What I have come to find through my high school and university years, is that as much as social media can be a fun and creative space, it can also be a place of comparison and negativity.

Readers' Forum: Taking medical advice from America's greatest pill pushers, the FDA

May 30, 2023 12:00 AM
What would happen if what we were always told is best for us, actually wasn’t? The voices with the biggest influence in medicine repeatedly feed us the idea that medication in tiny capsules is the cure to every problem. We never question it because we trust that they have our best interest in mind. However, like most things in life, it's more about the paycheck at the end of the day than anything else. We should be doing our own research and discovering what’s best for our bodies if we really have our own best interests in mind.

Readers’ Forum: The confines of the Cougareat

May 22, 2023 12:00 AM
There’s a glow coming from the Cougareat and your feet advance toward the haze with the crowd, as if you have no choice to withdraw. The closer you get, the array of neon signs glow brighter and the smell of something delicious hits your sense of smell with more force than ever before. A corner turned and an alley of delicious fast food restaurants are presented at your feet, planted right here on your school campus.

Readers' Forum: Break the seasonal cycle

November 14, 2022 12:00 AM
To quote the director of the local Provo Bicycle Collective, Kira Johnson, who has been cycling to work year-round since 2016, “There’s no such thing as bad weather, only bad clothing.”

Here it comes, the dreaded question of “Where did you serve your mission? Hawaii! No way! You must’ve loved that so much.”

Reader's Forum: Loving Means Listening

I don’t want to think about politics when I’m at church — or on a date, hanging out with friends, or visiting family.

Opinion: Home is anywhere and everywhere

May 11, 2022 12:00 AM
I can picture it now — the home where you were raised from the time your parents brought you home from the hospital, little pencil marks on door frames that measured your growth over the years. Best friends that live across the street that have been with you from preschool until high school graduation.

Opinion: Finding hope through BYU women’s basketball

April 07, 2022 12:00 AM
Earlier this year my husband and I found out that our first child would be a daughter. The joy I felt was inconceivable but was quickly replaced by fear. Raising a girl is one of the scariest things I have ever done. As someone who has experienced gender-based discrimination and harassment, I was terrified to take on the responsibility of bringing another girl into this world.

Opinion: Yes, I am like other girls

February 23, 2022 12:00 AM
Picture this: The year is 2009. I just turned 10 years old, and I also just purchased a T-shirt with my favorite band on it. This band, of course, is the Jonas Brothers. The iconic Disney Channel boy band who I had been obsessed with for several years by this point.

Opinion: Hustle culture at BYU needs to end

January 13, 2022 12:00 AM
If you are like me, you may have had a conversation with another student about who was on campus longer or who had done more work that day. This praised, but dangerous situation is called hustle culture.

Opinion: That's not righteous judgment, that's gossip

January 05, 2022 12:00 AM
My sophomore year of high school I moved from Hawai'i to California. For about a year I felt pretty alone, I didn't really click with the people in my ward or at my school. Then my junior year my parents got divorced, so things didn't really get sunnier for little teenage me.

Opinion: Movies are back and bringing people together this summer

June 21, 2021 12:00 AM
One of the toughest and most disappointing parts of the pandemic for a lot of people was the lack of social experiences because of popular events getting postponed or shut down.
