Opinion: The future of an Obama second term
November 06, 2012 12:00 AM
Twice a year at general conference, Latter-day Saints have the opportunity to raise their right hands and sustain their church leaders. We are taught that this is an important moment. Through the physical representation of our faith and support of the office that our leaders hold, we help them to succeed in their callings.

Wading through the 'sea of negativity'
October 19, 2012 12:00 AM
Walking down the frozen Ukrainian streets, listening to my two companions talk in rapid Russian that I couldn’t understand a word of, I felt frustrated and overwhelmed. Inside our apartment that night while planning our day, one of my companions noticed my negative body language and asked me what was wrong, to which I curtly responded ‘I’m fine’ and then didn’t expound on what was really bothering me.

Should we 'check our religion at the door' in politics?
October 04, 2012 12:00 AM
Driving around in my dad’s pickup truck to stake campaign poster’s stating “Vote Mayor Lacy” is one of my earliest memories as a child. For as long as I can remember, politics have been part of the discussion in the Lacy household.

Prejudice: the act of not understanding one another
September 20, 2012 12:00 AM
Listening to the Jewish shopkeeper go on and on about his dislike of the Palestinians in Jerusalem, I wondered why this man had so much hatred in his heart. What kind of personal experience had led this man to have such strong opposing views against the people that live just miles from his home? The conflict has existed for centuries. Since before the time of Christ, the Jews and the Palestinians have been fighting.

Too cool for school

Consider how often you’ve heard the following statements: “You don’t need to read the book, just go to class.' 'It’s OK, I went to class once a week and still got an A.' 'I started my paper the day before it was due and just pulled an all-nighter to finish it.”

Opinion: Take Responsibility For Your Family's Future
September 07, 2012 12:00 AM
“I wish that I had known more about my options back then.” My mother had been in strenous pain for hours before the doctor rushed into the room, turned to my dad and suggested a Cesarean birth. Looking between his exhausted wife and the doctor, my dad didn’t know what to do, but finally he gave in to the doctor’s suggestion.
