Wilkinson Student Center updates better accommodate students

Carpet protection tape, yellow caged lights, plywood and white tarps have made it difficult for students to eat and navigate through the BYU Store. However, this construction has dramatically changed the appearance of the dining and shopping areas in the Wilkinson Student Center, and students have taken notice.

Ed Smart, LGBT community and allies share thoughts on inclusion at Encircle conference

Ed Smart, father of Elizabeth Smart, and performers and speakers took part in Encircle's third annual LGBTQ+ Summit held at Podium on Dec. 7. Encircle, a nonprofit organization that aids LGBT youth, hosted hundreds of members, supporters and other interested parties who gathered for workshops and performances from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.

BYU offers subscription to self-help mental health app

BYU Counseling and Psychological Services recently made a mental health app accessible for BYU students. The Sanvello app is free to BYU students who use their student email to set up a new account. Sanvello allows students to access meditation walk-throughs and Spotify playlists while also keeping track of daily mood changes.

Provo City announces completed Cougar Boulevard construction

Construction on Cougar Boulevard, formerly known as Bulldog Boulevard, is complete as of this past week. According to a Provo City press release, improvements include a buffered bicycle lane, reconstructed sidewalks, replaced roadway asphalt and a new traffic signal at 400 West. Additional improvements can be found at Provo City's website.

BYU students try to outsmart law professors while raising money for family crisis center

Shouts echoed off the unfinished walls and hands slapped the sawdust covered tables of the J. Reuben Clark Law School's moot courtroom at noon on Nov. 21. Construction on the courtroom had halted for an hour so law students with plates of pizza could watch their professors compete against each other at the Women in Law's Stump the Professor event.

Teachers, college professors and librarians gathered at the Marriott Hotel on Center Street for the Learning Edge Annual Administrators Conference hosted by the Center for the Improvement of Teacher Education and Schooling. Beginning at 7:30 a.m., registration and breakfast were held with a musical performance by the Herriman High School Chamber Orchestra, following which, Mary Helen Immordino-Young gave the keynote address based on the conference's theme: 'arts for life, deep learning, deep connections.'

BYU professors sometimes invite visitors to lecture during their class to discuss issues they might otherwise feel underqualified to talk about. Moroni Benally, coordinator for public policy and advocacy at Restoring Ancestral Winds Incorporated, was one of these visitors to the Introduction to Global Women's Studies class on the first floor of the Kennedy Center. Advocating the rights of indigenous communities, he shared stories and numbers he described as 'sobering statistics.”
