Latter-day Saint organizations weigh in on social media representation of the Church

Organizations with large social media followings are sharing how they accurately advocate for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints online.

Josh Coates, executive director of the BH Roberts Foundation, said that their purpose is “to support faith in The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints."

Jasmin Gimenez Rappleye is the director of communications for Scripture Central and runs the popular social media page @scriptureplus. Scripture Central strives to help Latter-day Saints grow their testimonies in Jesus Christ and His Church by “illuminating the scriptures," she said.

“It's about the Savior. It's about, you know, bringing people to Christ," David Snell, host of Keystone, said.

Representatives from these three organizations explained that they spend hours researching before they publish anything online.

"We'll pick a topic and then we'll spend, oh, probably one hundred to two (or) three hundred hours pulling out all the primary source data related to a topic,” Coates said.

Rappleye is constantly trying to combine the Church and social media in an entertaining way, she said.

"We try to marry these two things of historical research with content creation and social media outreach, rooted in the core doctrines of The Church of Jesus Christ (of Latter-day Saints),” Rappleye said.

These individuals and organizations have a considerable following online, but they say there are more important things to them than the numbers.

Snell said it is special to talk with the people he gets to interact with online.

"Seeing their lives change and the decisions they make, and light bulbs going on and connections being made" are another highlight, he said.

Rappleye said she loves to share the gospel online because of the testimony that she has grown.

"I believe so fully that this is God's Church on the earth," she said. "I've had personal experiences in my life that have confirmed that God is real, that He loves me, that Joseph Smith is a prophet. All of those things compel me to want to share that in any way I can."
