Five Years Ago: President Nelson's #HearHim initiative

On Feb. 26, 2020, President Russell M. Nelson of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints issued an invitation to the world; five years later, students at Brigham Young University are sharing how they acted on the prophet's challenge.

"I invite you to think deeply and often about this key question. How do you hear Him?" President Nelson said. "I also invite you to take steps to hear him better and more often."

Following President Nelson's initial video, general authorities and officers of the Church flooded social media with posts explaining how they #HearHim.

"Blessings will follow to you and someone else, if you hear him," President Dallin H. Oaks, first counselor in the First Presidency of the Church, said.

"It gave me that calm reassurance that the plan of salvation was … real," President Camille N. Johnson of the Relief Society said.

"There is something about saying the words, and for me, saying them out loud," President Jeffrey R. Holland, president of the Quorum of the Twelve, said.

"That is that love which is the key, I think," Elder Dieter F. Uchtdorf, a member of the Quorum of the Twelve, said.

Church leaders were not the only ones who followed President Nelson's invitation. Many BYU students shared how they have been able to hear the Savior.

Maddie Bates, a BYU student, "hears Him" by "taking time, everyday, to just ponder and think about the Savior," she said.

Tyler Clyman, another BYU student, "hears Him" through "silent prayer, and private prayer," he said.

"(I hear Him) when I am still and quiet reading my scriptures in the morning,” Evan Arkell, another BYU student, said.

Tyler Covington, another student at BYU, acts on President Nelson's invitation when "listening to sacred music or playing the piano," he said.

"(I hear Him) when I'm outside seeing a sunset, or in the mountains," Brynn Garner, a BYU student, said.

The prophet's invitation has helped individuals increase their ability to feel the Spirit and overcome challenges throughout the last five years, students said.

"I've learned that when I couple my suffering with the Savior's suffering, it becomes an exalting experience for me," Elise Owens, a BYU student, said.

Other students shared that they have accepted President Nelson's challenge by participating in temple work.

"I recently got my endowments out in August, and so I have really enjoyed being able to go to the temple, getting to go to the celestial room and being able to pray there and feel God's presence," Tyler Pinkney, a student at BYU, said.

President Nelson prophesied about revelation and the future of the Church in his invitation.

“In coming days, it will not be possible to survive spiritually without the guiding, directing, comforting and constant influence of the Holy Ghost," he said.
