Men’s soccer overcomes slow start, beats Utah for fourth straight win

“We tied [Utah] the first game of the season, so we knew it was going to be a tough game,” Ryan Tetro said about last night’s game against the Utes.

Coming off of a third straight national championship season, the Cougars opened the season with high hopes of capturing a fourth. In the first game of the season, they were met with heavy resistance as Utah packed in their defense and managed to keep BYU scoreless, resulting in a 0-0 tie.

Fortunately, the team was able to win their next three games, allowing only one goal in those games. They then prepared for their second and final matchup with the Utes this season.

The match in Salt Lake City started out as a defensive battle with neither team being able to strike paydirt in the first 45 minutes. Coming out after the break, the Cougars were hungry to avoid the same result from earlier this season and Evan Smith was able to break the tie.

Later in the half, Brayden Gonder extended BYU’s lead and the match ended in a 2-0 Cougar victory.

BYU is outscoring their opponents by a score of 17-1 this season, and will look to extend the winning streak on Friday when they take on the Utah State Aggies at South Field.
