As Brigham Young University football looks to take on the Boise State Broncos tonight, two key figures lead the team, and both that almost played for the opposing side.
The Cougars, on the cusp of a special season, will lean heavily on junior quarterback Zach Wilson and wide receiver Dax Milne to lead them to victory over Boise State.
This dynamic duo has been a force for the Cougars since day one, however, this was not always guaranteed.
Wilson, Milne and sophomore wide receiver Brayden Cosper almost ended up on the other side of this rivalry, playing football for the Boise State Broncos.
“I remember the conversation when I was younger. Dax was thinking about coming here, Brayden Cosper was already committed here, I was committed at Boise State. I was trying to get them to decommit.”
At one point in his recruitment process, Zach Wilson committed to Boise State and planned to play for the Broncos, and he didn’t want to go alone either.
Being childhood friends, Wilson spoke with both Milne and Cosper about coming to Boise as well. However, plans ultimately changed.
Receiver Dax Milne remembers the talks he had with Wilson at that time: “He was always trying to convince me to go up there, and then when he finally decommitted from there and talked about going to BYU, that’s when he, all the time, just talking to me and Brayden Cosper, just saying, ‘Come here, come here.’”
Now as members of the 9th-ranked team in the country and playing for a possible berth into a major bowl game, it’s safe to say that both Wilson and Milne are happy to be playing here under head coach Kalani Sitake.
Wilson remembers Sitake being the factor that convinced him to come to Provo: “I remember Brayden telling me, he’s like, ‘Dude, I promise you, wait until you talk to Coach Kalani, and you’re gonna be here at BYU,’ and I guess Kalani talked me into it. ”
As the Cougars take the field tonight against the Boise State Broncos, Zach Wilson and Dax Milne may take a minute to think about what could have been. But Cougar Nation are happy that they are here now.
Both Milne and Wilson are featured within the top 10 at their position, and both were named to watchlists for the top awards at their positions as well. The Cougars hope to go 8-0 with a win over the Broncos.
