Women’s Golf: Mateo finishes in third place at the Cowgirl Classic

Allysha Mae Mateo finished third at the Cowgirl Classic on Oct. 23 after the tournament was delayed due to wind and thunderstorms.

Despite the poor conditions, Mateo’s final round was her best, with a score of 73 (+1) at the Karsten Creek Golf Course in Stillwater, Oklahoma. She tied for third overall with a combined score of 221 (+5).

It is her second top-five finish in the first two tournaments of the season after finishing second in the season opener.

“It was some great playing by Allysha,” BYU head coach Carrie Roberts said. “She had a great finish among some really great players.”

The weather made it difficult for the participating teams to record traditional scores. BYU finished in fifth place with a three-round team score of 948 (+84), tying with Iowa State for eighth place. Baylor won the tournament with a score of 891 (+27).

Sophomore Kerstin Fotu tied for 26th place overall but was recognized for her hole-in-one on hole 15.

Junior Annick Haczkiewicz and senior Naomi Soifu tied for 45th overall. Sophomore Cynthia Tu finished in 48th place.

The Cougars will play in their last fall tournament Nov. 9-10 at the Mercer Invitational in Macon, Georgia.
