As of today, the Sunrise Mine fire that has been threatening the southwestern border of Colorado is 100 percent contained.
A news release sent out by the Rocky Basin 2 Incident Management team stated that, “Today rehabilitation work continued to restore the areas disturbed by firefighter operations during the incident … Resources continue to be removed from the incident and made available for others. Remaining crews will continue to patrol and monitor the fire and mop up and hot spots as they occur.”
The release also states that there is still smoke visible due to some burning in the interior islands. However, this burning should not pose any threat to the containment lines.
The fire, ignited May 25, covered 5,742 acres with the total cost racking up to $4,146,254. The cause of the fire is believed to be human started, but the specific cause is inconclusive.
Effective today, the Great Basin Incident Management team will no longer be giving updates about the contained fire. Management has been turned over to a local fire management team.
