How long has it been since BYU played Texas Tech?

The last time BYU and Texas Tech played against each other, there was a world war in Europe.

Their first matchup was held on Oct. 18, 1940, a year after the start of World War II. It’s now been 83 years and the two teams get to hit the field in Provo this Saturday.

The last time the Cougars and Red Raiders played each other:

  • Germany, Italy, and Japan signed an alliance
  • German forces were bombing London
  • Hundreds of thousands of British troops fled from Dunkirk, France
  • Winston Churchill gave his “Finest Hour” speech
  • The Warsaw Ghetto is established and closed off from the outside world
  • The animated short “A Wild Hare” is released, introducing the character Bugs Bunny for the first time
  • Disney’s Fantasia was about to make its theatrical debut
  • Minimum wage laws and 44-hour work weeks were established
  • Franklin D. Roosevelt was about to be re-elected as president for the third time
  • The Green Bay Packers became the first NFL team to travel to a game by plane
  • LaVell Edwards had just turned 10 years old

In their 1940 meeting, Texas Tech beat BYU in a close game (21-20).

The two teams will play this Saturday, Oct. 21, at LaVell Edwards Stadium in Provo, Utah. Kickoff begins at 5 p.m., MDT.

If the Cougars can win this game, it will be BYU’s first win against the Red Raiders and BYU’s first win against a legacy Big 12 program since joining the conference.
