The BYU Women’s soccer team found out they play TCU in the first round of the NCAA tournament on Monday afternoon.
BYU plays in Fort Worth, Texas tonight.
The automatic bid to the NCAA tournament comes after the Cougars won the West Coast Conference Championship.
BYU has won the West Coast Conference title six out of the past seven years. BYU missed out on post season play last season but in 2016 they advanced to the third round of the NCAA tournament and are looking to do the same this year.
“Last year they had a pretty hard season, so I knew coming into this year that everyone would be heartbroken over last season they just had. So, they were gonna put in so much more effort and so much more work this year. I knew this season was going to be a turning point just cause everyone didn’t want a repeat of last year,” said freshman forward, Olivia Wade.
The team’s lone senior, Maddie Siddoway Gates, and head coach, Jennifer Rockwood, contribute this years success to an improved offensive attack along with having more players on the field with experience.
TCU holds a 12-4-3 record while tying for third place in the Big 12 Conference. TCU only allows about nine shots per game while BYU averages 22 shots on goal a game. TCU is led by Kayla Hill and Maddy Warren, who both have six goals on the season, and Emily Alvarado, who has only allowed 11 goals.
This BYU team recently received many honors, including Coach Rockwood as WCC coach of the year; Mikayla Colohan and Elise Flake were named to the All-conference first team while Bella Folino and Olivia Wade were named to the All-WCC Freshman Team.
We will see how the Cougars do in the first round as they take on TCU tonight at 6 p.m.
