Brigham Young University’s home-game student sections are known for always roaring loud. As the #1 team in the nation, the women’s volleyball team credits a lot of their success to the supportive energy of the fans.
Almost 3,000 Cougar fans came to support their undefeated women’s volleyball team.
“They’ve been crushing it every single time, and it’s been so fun to cheer them on from the students section,” said student fan, Megan Duricka. “I think they’re gonna keep doing great, and I love showing them my support. It’s super fun to be a BYU Cougar.”
BYU’s women’s volleyball fans broke the previous attendance record a few weeks ago against the Utes, when almost 5,500 fans came to support the team. They filled almost every inch of the Smith Fieldhouse, and they were even turning fans away because there wasn't any more room.
“There's a huge vibe especially when the ROC has a huge presence here,” said freshman setter, Tayler Tausinga. “It's pretty awesome when it’s loud in here. It just intimidates the other team, we really feed off the energy. It’s cool.”
Last night’s match against Loyola Marymount saw the same rush of support from the fans.
The Cougars brought a three set win, remaining undefeated this season. Not only were the 3,000 fans supporting our Cougs, they were also there in support of Breast Cancer awareness. The bleachers became a sea of pink shirts supporting the cause. The Cougars have been virtually unbeatable at home games, with a 97% win rate since 2011.
The players want the fans who support them, both at the fieldhouse and on the road, to know that they are appreciated.
“Just a big thank you,” said Tausinga. “It really means a lot when they come out and support. It helps a ton with the energy, so just thank you.”
“A huge thank you and please, please, please come to all the next games for the rest of the season, and so grateful like we are where we are because of the fans,” said senior libero, Sydnie Martindale.
Tomorrow, the women’s volleyball team’s faces off against the Pepperdine Wave.
The Cougars have won the past 13 meetings with Pepperdine, and the Waves’ only conference loss this season came against BYU. They will play here at the Smith Fieldhouse at 1:00 pm. Make sure to get there early, it’s Cosmo’s birthday celebration, which means $1 Cougartails for the first 500 fans.
