15 stores opening soon in Provo, Orem

Many new stores are set to open in 2018 and 2019 in Provo and Orem, including popular shops and restaurants many residents have hoped would come to the area.

Provo City Deputy Mayor of Economic Development Dickson Holmes shared the plans for upcoming Provo stores, and Orem City Economic Development Division Manager Ryan Clark shared the plans for the upcoming Orem stores.

Provo

1. Target

Target announced today their plans of opening Utah’s first small-format Target, set to open later this year at 1290 N. State St. at the intersection of Bulldog Blvd in the Riverside Plaza shopping center.

“Our first small-format store in Utah will offer BYU students and area residents a convenient, one-stop shopping experience that offers the best of Target custom-tailored for local guests. We design our campus stores to meet the unique needs of the neighborhood, and we look forward to making shopping easy and inspiring for students and families in the Cougar community,” said Mark Schindele, senior vice president, Properties, Target, in a press release.

Target plans to employ up to 50 employees at the new store. Target’s country-wide minimum wage is $12 an hour, and the company plans to raise its minimum wage to $15 an hour by the end of 2020.

“Our residents have hoped for a Target for very long time, and we are so excited to welcome this store to Provo,” said Provo Mayor Michelle Kaufusi in a press release.  “The store will be a retail destination for students and families alike, making it an excellent addition to the Riverside Plaza shopping center and to our community.”

2. The Habit Burger Grill

A new Habit Burger Grill will be opening at Parkway Village in “the next month or two,” according to Holmes.

The Habit Burger Grill is an American fast casual restaurant chain that specializes in charbroiled hamburgers.

3. Ross 

A new Ross clothing store will be opening in February 2019 in the East Bay by Sam’s Club.

A Ross is currently open on University Parkway in Orem. The department store’s slogan is “Dress for Less” and sells “off-price” clothing and home decor.

4. R&R BBQ

R&R BBQ plans to open a new restaurant in the Riverwoods later this summer. The restaurant sells smoked meat by the plate or pound.

5. Fish Spa

Fish Spa will offer a new service to Provo — small fish who eat the dead skin off of people’s feet and legs.

The store will open later this summer in downtown Provo on Center street. It’s exact location is still undetermined.

6. Cafe Rio

A new Cafe Rio is under construction to replace the current Cafe Rio in in Plum Tree plaza. The current store will not close until the new one is ready to open.

The new Cafe Rio will have a drive through, out door seating and more space inside.

7. Hyatt Place

Hyatt will open a new hotel this summer “in the next month or two” on Center Street near the Convention Center, according to Holmes.

8. Quick Quack Car Wash

A new Quick Quack Car Wash will open on 1700 N State Street later this year.

Orem

9. Trader Joe’s

A long-awaited Trader Joe’s is opening soon at University Place where Big O Tires and Wells Fargo used to be. Clark said Orem City does not know the official opening date, but they are currently under construction.

Trader Joes is a “fresh format” grocery store selling several unique store brand products.

10. A pancake and steak restaurant

A restaurant serving pancake and steak is set to open in Midtown 360. The name is still to be determined pending trademark approval.

Clark said they are currently under construction and are about 60 to 70 percent done.

Downeast Home and Clothing and Cafe Rio are both currently under construction in Orem in the space previously occupied by Chuck E Cheese. (Ryan Clark)

11. Cafe Rio

Cafe Rio in Orem is moving around the corner to the location where Chuck E Cheese used to be located. The new store will have more space, outdoor seating and better parking.

12. Downeast Home and Clothing

A large Downeast Home and Clothing store will also open in the space previosly occupied by Chuck E Cheese.

13. Mora Iced Creamery

Mora Ice Cream will give locals a new high end dessert option when it opens between at University Place between Macey’s department store and Midici.

It is described as an “elegant ice cream made with impeccable ingredients” by the Seattle Times.

14. Yummy’s BBQ

Yummy’s BBQ is a Korean BBQ and sushi restaurant. It’s opening tomorrow in Midtown 360.

15. Big O Tires

Big O Tires will be moving to a new location near Costco on 800 S.
