The John R. Wooden Award announced today on ESPN that Kyle Collinsworth was named to its Preseason Top 50.
A poll of national college basketball experts determine who makes the Preseason Top 50. The list is refined multiple times throughout the season leading up to the Wooden Award Weekend in April.
Collinsworth is averaging 14.5 points, 11.0 rebounds, 6.5 assists and 1.5 steals per game so far this season. Last year he led the Cougars to an at-large bid for the NCAA tournament and set the single-season record for triple-doubles.
The John R. Wooden Award was created in 1976 in honor of the legendary player and coach and is the most prestigious individual award in college basketball. John R. Wooden was the first person to be inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame as a player and coach.
Danny Ainge and Jimmer Fredette are the only two players from BYU to ever receive the John R. Wooden Award. Other notable recipients include Michael Jordan, Tim Duncan and Kevin Durant.
