BYU announced a football home-and-home series with the Spartans of Michigan State Jan. 21.

The Cougars will travel to East Lansing Sept. 3, 2016, and MSU will come to LaVell Edwards Stadium Sept. 12, 2020. This is the first time the two teams have faced each other.

“I’m excited about this series with one of the top programs in the Big Ten,” BYU Director of Athletics Tom Holmoe said.

Holmoe said it is a chance for BYU to play a new team. “We haven’t played many games in the Great Lakes region, and I like scheduling opponents like Michigan State that we’ve never played in football,' he said. 'It’s exciting for Cougar Nation, and it’s a great experience for our coaches and players.”

Michigan State is the third Big 10 Conference team BYU will take on in the next five years. Two of those teams, Michigan and Nebraska, are on the schedule for the upcoming 2015 season.

Michigan State has been playing football for 130 years. In that span the Spartans won national championships in 1951, 1952, 1955, 1957, 1965 and 1966. MSU has gone 24-3 since 2013.

In the past 40 seasons, only four FBS programs, Nebraska, Oklahoma, Ohio State and Florida State, have won more games than BYU.

Kickoff times and broadcast plans for the series will be announced at a later date.
