Freshman Savannah Ware's win at sixth singles pulled the BYU women's tennis team through to a win over San Francisco.
As BYU's first match for the West Coast Conference this season, the 4-3 win brought BYU to 4-4, while San Francisco dropped to 8-4. San Francisco has lost both of its matches in the West Coast Conference so far.
Meghan Sheehan-Dizon returns the ball to her opponent in a previous match this season.
“It feels really good to pull out a win today, especially after losing the doubles point,” said BYU head coach Lauren Jones-Spencer. “Everyone stepped up, and it means a lot. It’s a really important confidence-builder going forward.”
Ware's match started out in her favor; she won the first set 6-4 but then lost the next. Soon Ware found herself down 2-5, but that wasn't the end for her. She fought back hard, winning the match 7-5, and snatched the win for BYU.
San Francisco was ahead 3-2, but freshman Toby Miclat brought BYU to tie San Francisco, allowing Ware to fight for the win.
Freshman Mayci Jones lost her match, but Nicolette Tran took a win against her San Francisco opponent.
Senior Desiree Tran also took a loss in her match, but junior Meghan Sheehan-Dizon took a win.
The matches finished in the following order: Doubles (2,3,1); Singles (1,3,2,4,5,6)
BYU's next match will be away against Yale on Friday at 1.30 p.m (MDT).
