Women's soccer opens conference play in California

The No. 22 BYU women's soccer team heads west this week to open West Coast Conference play this week. The Cougars visit the University of San Francisco on Thursday, Oct. 10, then head to No. 18 Santa Clara on Saturday, Oct.12.

The Cougars are coming off of a big win last Friday at Baylor, beating the No. 20 Bears 2-1. Goals from seniors Cloee Colohan and Colette Jepson Smith carried the Cougars to victory. Head coach Jennifer Rockwood is hoping the team will ride the momentum from the big win into a successful conference campaign. The Cougars are looking to defend last year's conference championship.

The San Francisco Dons are currently on a three-game losing streak and are winless in five games. They will look to halt this streak against the Cougars at home. The Dons lost 3-0 to Nebraska early in the season, a team the Cougars beat 3-1.

The game on Saturday against Santa Clara will be one of the premier match-ups of the season in the West Coast Conference. Santa Clara was chosen as the preseason favorite to win the conference and will look to make a statement against the defending champion Cougars. The Cougars are looking for their first victory versus Santa Clara, having tied the Broncos in 2012.

Friday's game will be at 8 p.m. MDT, and Saturday's game will be held at 2 p.m., MDT. Saturday's game against Santa Clara will also be streamed on TheW.tv, the conference's new television network and streaming service.
