The BYU women's golf team gears up for the end of its fall season, heading out to the Big Island of Hawaii to compete in the Rainbow Wahine Invitational.
'I think we're all just really excited to kind of close our fall season off with a good tournament,' junior Selu Fotu said. 'We've had some good experience throughout the fall, and I think everyone is ready to play well.'
The team goes from practicing at an elevation of 4,551 feet down to sea level this week, and the girls must adjust their swings to compensate.
'(Altitude) affects us in distance a little bit,' Fotu said. 'The ball goes farther because of sea-level and what-not, but other than that I don't think it'll be too bad.'
The Cougars have seen a lot of improvement this fall season, having gone from finishing 12th in September, with a combined team score of 915, to finishing 9th in their last tournament with a combined team score of 901. They hope to continue their improvement as they finish the fall season and begin work for their winter season.
With just one more tournament before the fall season ends, Fotu hopes to end with a bang.
'All year we all have been talking about breaking into the top 10 individually,' Fotu said. 'So I think that is one of my biggest goals, to hit that goal and be in the top 10 before our fall season ends.'
Though the fall season is ending this week, the team doesn't stop practicing.
'We'll practice until our winter, Christmas break,' Fotu said. 'It's not as much and it's not as heavy, but we'll be out there for a couple of hours every day.'
The Cougars begin playing Tuesday morning and finish the tournament Wednesday afternoon.
