BYU Baseball Coach Vance Law will be singing the seventh inning stretch classic 'Take Me Out to the Ballgame' Wednesday, July 30, during the Chicago Cubs vs. San Francisco Giants game at Wrigley Field.
Law played for the Cubs during the 1988-89 seasons and has been invited back to sing for the third straight year.
'It''s nice to be a part of the tradition here,' Law said. 'It''s nice to come back and enjoy being back at Wrigley Field.'
The tradition at Wrigley Field is well known amongst sports fans across the nation, especially during the seventh inning stretch. For 16 years radio personality Harry Caray would lean out the window and lead the crowd in the famous song.
'He is very respectful and mindful of the tradition they have at Chicago,' said baseball media relations director Ralph Zobell.
'It''s a lot of fun,' Law said. 'I enjoy music. It''s a big part of my life.'
After his first appearance, Law was invited by the Cubs to sing the national anthem with his father as well as 'Take Me Out to the Ballgame' last season.
'It was fun,' Law said. 'They make you send in a tape to make sure you know what you''re doing.'
Along with coaching and singing, Law also plays the piano, a talent he contributes fully to his mother.
'Mom made me practice for years and now I''m glad she did,' Law said.
Law uses music as a way to relax before a big event.
'It''s something he''s been doing since high school,' Zobell said. 'Something like this is an opportunity to tell people what a good coach we have. He''s a much better singer than I am.'
Law said the fans of Chicago are very knowledgeable and still recognize him on the streets as a former Cub. He wants to represent BYU well for his fans in the windy city.
'BYU is well respected around the country and this is no exception,' Law said.
Law will also be in Chicago in September to be a part of the White Sox 'Turn Back the Clock Weekend.' The weekend is a celebration for the 20-year reunion when the Sox won the 1983 American League West title. Law was a member of the White Sox from 1982-84.
The Cubs host the Giants today at 12:20 p.m.
