The prospect of summer wedding bells presents a difficult decision. Walmart or Target. Bed Bath & Beyond or Linens ”n Things. Sears or J.C. Penney.

The choices for wedding registries are abundant in Utah County, and today”s tradition persuades couples to tell their guests what wedding gifts they want.

For Posen and Connie Yang, who were married June 7 in San Diego, the decision of where to register was difficult, but they say it reaped its benefits.

“I really like the registry because you get what you want,” Connie Yang said.

Connie, 20, a BYU sophomore from Seattle, Washington, a pre-communications major, said family and friends appreciate having a specific list from which to shop.

Her husband, Posen, 25, a BYU senior from Cypress, Calif., majoring in facility management, said he also like it, but found it could be restricting.

The Yangs registered at Bed Bath & Beyond and Sears.

Recent complaints made against Target swayed the Yangs from registering there.

“I heard a lot of horror stories about people trying to return stuff,” Connie Yang said.

Candace Lish, a Target customer service employee, says Target has a bad reputation without reason.

“We have a large selection and unique items other stores don”t have,” she said.

Lish said Target remedied complaints about their return policy.

“There used to be a limit on how many trips you could make to return your gifts,” she said, “but we just kept telling people to write and complain until they (Target) changed it. And they did.”

The Yangs said they liked Bed Bath & Beyond for their return policy.

“The nice thing about them was you could return your gifts and they”d give you cash for it,” Connie Yang said.

Janet Pugh, a customer service representative, said Bed Bath & Beyond draws many engaged couples to their wedding registry.

“We have a bridal consultant at the store to help, and people like that,” Pugh said.

The Yang”s said one drawback was it was a little expensive.

“We found the same stuff at Wal-Mart – same brand and everything – for about half the price,” Posen Yang said. “We could have gotten more for the money.”

The Yangs said Sears was good, but had its drawbacks as well.

“We chose Sears because they have good quality stuff for the money you pay,” Connie Yang said. “But I was disappointed with their online wedding registry. I felt like it was really limited.”

The Yang”s said, if given the chance, they would register again because it makes it easier to buy gifts.

“I think the younger people don”t use registries as much as the older generation,” Connie Yang said. “They (older generation) don”t know us as well as our closer friends, so they need the added direction.”
