In response to the letter regarding Guitars Unplugged, I have a few comments. As someone who helped out a bit with the planning of this event, I can say that Guitars Unplugged was planned to provide a good show and give talented students a chance to perform on stage.
The judges (who do know something about music, despite insinuations to the contrary) chose performers whom they felt would best achieve these goals.
I think the performers did a wonderful job. Our feedback suggests that the vast majority of students had a great time and enjoyed the performances.
I realize that some people are going to disagree. With an activity like Guitars Unplugged, it is impossible to please everybody. We never expected to.
However, I can't help but notice that for all the people willing to complain about BYU activities, precious few ever decide to take action. BYUSA is always looking for motivated students to head up projects like Guitars Unplugged.
