The award, now in its 12th year, is given by the national governing body for softball in the United States and is designed to recognize outstanding female collegiate softball players and their achievements.

Clayton is one of 27 senior athletes in the country nominated for the award. She has a career batting average of .403 at BYU and has compiled 225 hits, 146 runs and 65 RBI in her three seasons as a Cougar. Last year, she was named to the Easton All-America Second Team, the NFCA All-Region First Team and the All-WAC FirstTeam.

She currently sits second on the all-time list of individual career and season batting averages at BYU and with 41 hits this season she could become No. 1 for career hits at BYU.

The Top 25 Finalists will be announced on April 10. Last year, senior Delaney Willard was a Top 25 Finalist for BYU. The list will then be narrowed to the Top 10 on May 8 and the Top 3 on May 2. The winner will be revealed on May 28 prior to the start of the 2013 NCAA Women’s College World Series.
