A man in his 60s was rescued early Thursday morning, June 5, after clinging to an overturned canoe for more than two hours. The incident began around 4 a.m. when the canoe began taking on water and flipped near a rail bridge in the Schuylkill River in Philadelphia.
The man held onto the vessel and drifted under the bridge, where he remained for more than an hour before bystanders heard him calling for help and dialed 911. Philadelphia’s Marine Unit responded and encountered difficulties reaching the man, but were ultimately able to pull him from the water around 6 a.m.
Both the man and several rescuers were taken to a nearby hospital for evaluation. The man is reported to be in stable condition. Officials have not released details on the extent of the officers' injuries.
