Women's volleyball: Arizona upsets No. 20 BYU, hands Cougars their first conference loss of the season

Arizona knocked off No. 20 BYU Wednesday night as the Wildcats pulled off an impressive win at the McKale Center in Tucson.

Arizona won the match 25-13, 23-25, 25-21, 18-25, 15-13.

The Cougars came into the contest undefeated in conference play (2-0), while the Wildcats were looking for their first conference win of the season after dropping their first two matches against No. 19 Baylor and No. 22 TCU.

Arizona head coach Charita Stubbs secured her biggest win in year two with the program while also winning the team's first Big 12 match of the season.

This was a thrilling match at the McKale Center, with great volleyball on full display.

Arizona got out to a hot start in the first set, jumping out to a 17-8 lead after a six-point run. They would go on to win that set over the Cougars with a score of 25-13. BYU recorded only three kills in the set while Jaelyn Hodge led Arizona with five kills and Jordan Wilson and Carlie Cisneros each adding four.

Set two was much closer as the Cougars won it 25-23. BYU had 17 kills in the set while the Wildcats had 15.

The third set was a nailbiter that Arizona would end up winning with a score of 25-21. There were 12 ties in the 3rd set but the Wildcats would pull away after the set was tied at 18.

Down 2-1 entering the fourth set and desperately needing to even the score, BYU dominated the set, cruising to a 25-18 win to force a fifth and final set.

The Cougars and Wildcats traded points until it was 5-5. Arizona would then go on a five-point run to stretch their lead and set them up for a victory. The Cougars fought until the end, but ultimately came up short 15-13 in the final set.

Brielle Kemavor came into the match leading the Big 12 in blocks with 67 and she added another five to her total. Claire Little led all players with 24 kills while also scoring a game-high 28 points.

BYU will take the floor again Friday night in Tempe as the Cougars look to rebound as they take on No. 15 Arizona State.
