Women's soccer: Cougars, Bears battle it out through Mother Nature to a 3-3 draw

Thunder. Lightning. Bangers.

In one of the more exciting draws of the season for the BYU women's soccer team, junior Allie Fryer scored two goals in the last six minutes to earn a 3-3 draw against the Baylor Bears.

The weather played a large part Thursday night as the match began with a one- hour delay. After the match started, both teams struggled to gain consistent control over the ball. The slick surface of the field proved to be a major factor with several mistimed passed and slippages affecting the game.

The Cougars struck first when junior Erin Bailey found the back of the net off of a ricocheted cross from Ella Rustland. The Cougars continued being the aggressor early in the match, as they would fire off four shots in the span of seven minutes, with three of those being on goal. The Cougars finished with 13 shots in the first half with nine of those shots being on goal.

Going into the half, the Cougars led 1-0 in the slick conditions.

Then Mother Nature struck again. This time accompanying the lighting was hail and rain, further delaying the game.

The delay paid off for the Bears as they came out firing on all cylinders. Baylor's pressure gave it early opportunities to score and it would pay off in the form of a 49th minute goal from Taylor Isgrig.

Isgrig's goal ricocheted off of BYU's Frischknecht.

Baylor kept BYU on its heels throughout the early part of the 2nd half with consistent pressure in BYU's zone. The pressure paid off once again for Baylor when netted two goals in the span of four minutes. First, it was Hallie Augustyn finding pay dirt for Baylor, followed by another goal only three minutes later.

BYU sense of urgency finally picked up after finding themselves down by two. Led by their leading scoring, Fryar, the Cougars found a renewed sense of urgency and brought up their intensity. Fryer would find the first of two late goals in the 85th minute using her left foot.

Fryer and BYU continued to push and pressure Baylor forcing Baylor into a handball inside the penalty box. In the 86th minute, Fryer knotted the score at 3-3 off of a missile of a penalty kick.

Both teams had multiple late chances to take a late lead in the final minutes, but both remained scoreless.

BYU's record now stands at 6-5-5. The Cougars' conference record stands at 4-2-3. BYU will play its final home game of the year, hosting Houston, on Monday at 7 p.m.
