Jake Retzlaff just keeps on with the surprises in the 2024 season, this time by being named one of the Great 8 for the 2024 Davey O’Brien National Quarterback Award Watchlist earlier this week.
Then again, maybe fans shouldn’t be surprised.
The Davey O’Brien is one of the most prestigious awards available to collegiate quarterbacks — and BYU has a long history with it. BYU's own Jim McMahon was named the first winner in 1981.
Since that 1981 season, BYU’s quarterback has won the award three times. In 1983 it was awarded to Steve Young. Ty Detmer won it in both 1990 and 1991 and now Retzlaff is one of the final eight for the 2024 season.
This season, Retzlaff has competed 121 of 205 passes for 1,644 yards and 16 touchdowns. He is also the Cougars' leading rusher with 49 carries for 265 yards and two TDs.
In BYU's thrilling 38-35 victory over Oklahoma State last week, Retzlaff orchestrated a 75-yard drive that included a 27-yard scramble and was capped by a 35-yard game-clinching touchdown pass to Darius Lassiter with 11 seconds remaining.
Against the Cowboys, Retzlaff completed 13 of 26 passes for 218 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He also ran nine times for 81 yards and a TD.
The Davey O’Brien Foundation was established to “recognize outstanding student-athletes for their achievements both on and off the field,” according to the official website. The Quarterback Award is given to those who exhibit “teamwork, sportsmanship, and leadership in both academics and athletics.”
This nomination comes to Retzlaff alongside a Manning Award Stars of the Week Honoree this week, and approximately 20 other award watchlists various players and coaches have been placed on since the beginning of this season.
