Why the BYU alumni football game was a night to remember at LaVell Edwards Stadium

Friday's BYU football alumni game at LaVell Edwards Stadium was one for the books.

The event brought together former players and current athletes for a night full of fun, memories and some seriously competitive football.

What stood out the most was the family atmosphere — and not just the players' families, but the larger BYU football “family” that gathered to celebrate their shared history.

The event began with a coin toss by Kalani Sitake, and Coby Pearson made the first play. The Navy team, led by Blaine Fowler and Charlie Peterson, quickly took charge with big plays, including Garrett Jurgens’ first interception, which turned into a pick-six. Moroni Laulu-Pututau added another pick-six, extending Navy’s lead.

The Royal team, led by Brandon Doman and Jackson Brown, fought back and Gavin Fowler connected with Tanner Balderee for a touchdown, briefly giving the Royals a 13-11 lead.

With 19 seconds left, Navy held a 25-20 lead, but the Royals had one last chance. Aleva Hifo almost made a game-winning catch in the end zone, but the ball slipped through.

Naufahu Tahi’s game-winning touchdown sealed the victory for Navy, and the celebration that followed was a joyful reunion of former teammates.

Through all the competitive plays and big hits, there were plenty of laughs, too. Austin Lee's kids were shouting during halftime, telling their dad to get a pick. He joked back, “I’m trying!” It was those little moments that made the night feel like a reunion — with old friends reconnecting and having fun like it was just another game.

Final Score:

Navy 25, Royal 20

At the end of the day, the game wasn’t just about the football. It was about the bond these players share, the legacy of BYU football and how that family spirit never fades, no matter how many years have passed.

It was a strong reminder that even though they may be older, these former Cougars still know how to put on a show.
