PARIS – BYU alumna Courtney Wayment finished the 3000-meter steeplechase in 12th place on Tuesday at Stade De France.
She finished with a time of 9 minutes and 13 seconds, the top American finisher in the race.
“I ran the smartest race that I could have and I am very proud,” Wayment said in an Instagram post after the race. “Thank you so much for the love and the support. Thank you for taking time out of your work days and your sleep schedules to watch me. Hopefully we made you guys proud. More to come and I am excited for the future.”
Wayment came into the Olympics ranked 14th in the world and showcased her talent in her Olympic debut. She narrowly missed out on the 2020 Tokyo Olympics by a single spot.
“This was an incredible journey to be here at the Olympics with both Courtney and Whitney and to have the opportunity to be coaching on this stage with two women who have had this dream for a long time,” Wayment’s coach, Diljeet Taylor, said in an Instagram post.
In her preliminary heat in the 2024 Games, the former Cougar secured her spot in the finals by finishing in fourth place with a time of 9 minutes and 10 seconds.
