BYU men's track and field runner Tyler Mathews won Outstanding Freshman of the Year for the Big 12, the conference announced Thursday.
Mathews runs the 500 meter, 600 yards, 600 meters, 800 meters, 1000 meters and 1 mile for the Cougars. He is most known for his performance at the 800 meter.
Mathews broke BYU's all-time record for the 800 meter with a time of 1:46:62 this season at the Husky Classic Meet. The redshirt freshman out of Mesa, Arizona was also a member of the distance medley relay that secured a new program record at 9:20:72.
Mathews and the BYU Cougars will compete at the 2025 NCAA indoor Track and field championship at Virginia Beach, Virginia, March 14-15.
