BYU offensive lineman Bruce Mitchell is set to make a significant impact for the Cougars after a productive spring practice session.
Mitchell, a 6-foot-4, 305-pound redshirt junior, comes from Oakley, Utah, where he starred at South Summit High School.
At South Summit, he played a key role in capturing consecutive 2A state championships in 2017 and 2018. Initially joining BYU as a defensive lineman, Mitchell recently transitioned to the offensive line, specifically at the center position.
“I had a good spring, felt like I got better as the spring went on,” Mitchell said.
His strong practice performances solidified his spot heading into the fall season.
“I imagine I'll be playing center in the fall because that's what I played all spring,” he said.
Graduate assistant offensive line coach Karter Shaw highlighted Mitchell’s commitment and consistency.
"Like any player in spring, Bruce had his good days and bad days. The thing that set him apart is the attitude and effort he attacks every day with," he said. "You know you will get everything he's got every time he steps on the field."
Shaw, who previously played collegiate football at Utah State and then at Minnesota in the Big Ten Conference, brings valuable insight from competing at the highest level of college football.
Fellow offensive lineman Austin Leusa also praised Mitchell, describing him as “a gritty guy.”
Leusa, who transferred to BYU last fall from Southern Utah University, made an immediate impact by showcasing his versatility at guard and tackle. Leusa's strong spring practice at the tackle position adds weight to his endorsement of Mitchell.
Mitchell’s optimism extends beyond personal success, with high aspirations for the Cougars' collective potential.
“I expect us to win a Big 12 championship,” Mitchell said. “We had great additions to the team.”
Academically, Mitchell is pursuing a degree in Business Management and was recognized as part of the Academic All-Big 12 First Team in 2023. Off the field, he enjoys fishing and spending time with his wife, Sadie Sargent, a BYU distance runner.
The Cougars begin their 2025 season on Aug. 30 against Portland State at LaVell Edwards Stadium, followed by another home game against Stanford on Sept. 6.
Road games against East Carolina on September 20 and Colorado on Sept. 27 follow. The Big 12 schedule features matchups against West Virginia, Arizona, Utah, Iowa State, Texas Tech, TCU, and Cincinnati, concluding the regular season with a home game against UCF on November 29. The Big 12 Championship Game is set for December 6 at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
BYU football anticipates Mitchell's continued development and leadership as the Cougars strive toward a successful conference campaign.
