Full circle moment for BYU softball freshman Bre Townsend

Recently, the BYU softball team traveled to Palm Springs, California, and competed in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.

During this tournament, freshman Bre Townsend had the highest batting average, .471 and led the Cougars to their 3-2 record.

Townsend is from Buena Park, which is about two hours from Palm Springs. Townsend would watch this tournament every year growing up with her family and it was a special moment for her.

“It was a full circle moment,” said Townsend, "actually getting to play in it for the first time, especially as a freshman.”

The Mary Nutter tournament represents more than just the same of softball, this tournament is supposed to being players and coaches together to add more to the sport. The funds of this tournament are also given back to the athletes to help with their education.

"It’s playing for something bigger,” said Townsend, “making the sport more meaningful than it already is.”

The Mary Nutter tournament is a very prestigious tournament held every year, and BYU has made 18 total appearances to support the cause.

The team has one more tournament planned, the Libby Matson tournament. The Cougars play during the preseason to help prepare them for conference play. Big 12 play starts Feb. 6 against Arizona State in Tempe.

The Cougars are still adjusting to the Big 12 and are calling this season their revenge tour because they did not make it to regionals last year.

“Everything that we’re doing now between practice and playing is all going towards trying to make regionals,” said Townsend.

BYU softball still has a way to go on their revenge tour. Right now, they are 9-4 with 35 more games to play in the regular season. Their next game is on Feb. 27 against Sacramento State.
