Former BYU standout Khyiris Tonga has carved out a strong role in the NFL, and the New England Patriots have leaned on his size and power in more ways than one.
Tonga’s main work still comes on defense, where he lines up at nose tackle and defensive tackle. His strength inside helps control running lanes, absorb double teams, and free up the linebackers behind him.
Coaches trust him in short yardage moments because he consistently resets the line of scrimmage and brings a physical edge to the middle of the defense.
The Patriots have also found a use for him on offense, inserting him as a jumbo fullback in heavy formations. Tonga’s job is to clear space at the point of attack, especially near the goal line.
His burst and leverage give New England an extra push when only a yard or two is needed, and his teammates feed off the energy he brings when he checks in on offense.
Even with the occasional offensive snaps, Tonga’s foundation remains on defense, where he continues to anchor the interior. His versatility has made him a valuable piece for New England, giving the team a dependable, physical presence whenever the game tightens up.
