Balancing field goals, fatherhood, and finance is all in a day’s work for BYU kicker Matthias Dunn, a junior who’s making his mark both on and off the field.
Dunn, who handles field goals and kickoffs for the Cougars, has been part of BYU football for three years. Before arriving in Provo, he played both flag and tackle football growing up, later joining his high school team during his junior and senior seasons.
While his leg has been great use for BYU, Dunn’s mind is equally sharp in the classroom. A finance major in the Marriott School of Business, he’s already building an impressive resume. Through the BYU Finance Society, Dunn has interned across several major industries including Investment Banking, Private Equity, Growth Equity, Venture Capital and Asset Management.
Last summer, Dunn worked at Morgan Stanley’s Technology Investment Banking group in Menlo Park, Calif.
“While I was there, I worked on a live M&A sell side deal for a software company and a live debt deal for an internet company,” Dunn said. “I covered additional clients across the software, internet, and semiconductor verticals.”
For Dunn, success requires more than just discipline. It’s about balance. As a husband, father, and Division I athlete, his days are full.
“Honestly it can be a lot,” he said. “I have to be very organized and disciplined. I spend about an hour each Sunday planning out my week. When I prioritize my relationship with God and my relationship with my wife and daughter, I find I’m able to accomplish more and focus better.”
Dunn credits BYU for shaping him into who he is today, on the field, in the classroom, and at home.
“BYU has had a huge impact on my life,” he said. “It’s made me a much better person. I’ve learned how to be disciplined, how to work hard, how to sacrifice, and how to rely on God for direction and strength. Most importantly, I’ve built strong relationships and made friends that will last my whole life.”
As the Cougars continue their season, Dunn’s consistency and composure mirror the values he’s learned in Provo: faith, focus, and family.
