LUBBOCK, Texas — Following No. 7 BYU’s 29-7 loss to No. 8 Texas Tech on Saturday, Chase Roberts delivered a demonstrative promise to Cougar fans.
Roberts, and also his teammates, seemed to be in good spirits as they know that even though a loss is tough to take, their postseason destiny still remains firmly in their control.
Winning their final three regular season games at home against TCU and UCF, and on the road at Cincinnati would secure their place in the Big 12 Championship on Dec. 6 in Dallas.
When asked about the team’s response to a demoralizing loss like this Roberts said, “It was an amazing experience, and you learn a lot from losses so (we’re) excited to go forward.”
As for his thoughts about critics who will now use this game as an “eye test” in relation to BYU’s chances of making the College Football Playoff, Roberts said, “They don’t know. They haven’t been in our workouts. They haven’t been in our practices. They don’t know what we do. So we gotta put it out on the field going forward so they can’t say anything.”
Many will now speculate that this season is a “deja vu” of sorts, compared to the 2024 campaign where BYU also started 9-0 and followed it up with two straight losses, costing them a spot in the Big 12 Championship and a shot at the College Football Playoff.
But Roberts is confident that this team is different.
When asked if he wants to see this team again, he delivered an assertive message.
“We’re going to meet them (Texas Tech) again, I promise you that, and we’re going to beat them," Roberts said.
