BYU women's soccer gets convincing victory in Big 12 opener

BYU women's soccer has not had an ideal start to their 2024 season. Ranked as the No. 3 team in the nation in the preseason, the Cougars opened up to a lackluster 2-3-2 start.

This meant that their matchup vs Arizona State on Thursday was a major test ... and they passed, earning a 1-0 victory.

The Sun Devils were scorching hot coming into Thursday night's matchup at South Field. They were winners of four straight, and were unbeaten on the season.

But BYU's offense proved to be too much for Arizona State and there was a stark difference early on in the game.

BYU had opportunity after opportunity in the first half, but couldn't quite capitalize off their chances. Highlighted by two amazing finger-tip saves by Sun Devils' keeper, Pauline Nelles, the first 40 minutes left the BYU players annoyed at the zero on the scoreboard.

But in the 42nd minute, BYU found a goal from an unlikely source: sophomore defender Avery Frischknecht.

Frischknecht's shot off of Sierra Pennock's corner kick was the first goal of her collegiate career and it couldn't have come at a more important time, breaking the goalless stalemate.

"I hit it in with my stomach, not even my head," Frischknecht said, "but whatever works, right?"

BYU ended the half outshooting Arizona State 12-3, including five shots on goal.

The second half was more of the same. BYU commanded time of possession and created more dangerous chances when they had the ball, but they were unable to capitalize off of their promising second half performance, and the game ended in a 1-0 victory.

"There's always room for improvement," Frishknecht said. "We're still working to get more goals in the back of the net, but we'll take the win tonight."

Last season, BYU went undefeated in Big 12 regular-season play. This conference win could be just what the Cougars need to gain momentum on the young season.

BYU will travel to Fort Worth to play TCU next Thursday.
