BYU women’s basketball's Delaney Gibb unanimously named to All-Big 12 preseason team

BYU women’s basketball sophomore star Delany Gibb has been unanimously named to the preseason All-Big 12 team.

The Alberta, Canada, product was originally the 48th-best recruit in the class of 2024 and had an impressive freshman year leading BYU women’s basketball with 17.4 points per game.

Gibb was a 10-time Big 12 Freshman of the Week winner in the 2024-2025 season and is looking to take steps to lead the Cougars to new heights in her sophomore campaign.

“I want to improve everything,” said Gibb. “Ultimately, I don’t like losing”

Gibb spent the summer playing basketball with the Canadian National Team competing at the FIBA Women’s Americup. She took home the bronze medal making a noticeable impact on a team filled with veteran leadership.

She averaged 9.1 points, 2.9 rebounds and 1.3 assists while playing with the Senior National Team, showing off her talent on a bigger stage.

This was the second bronze medal Gibb has won playing with the Canadian team, with the first being while playing with the U19 Canadian Team in the 2023 World Championship.

Gibb’s play with the Canadian National Team in the summer as well as her stellar freshman year has put BYU on other Big 12 teams' radars.

“She worked really hard this offseason with us and with team Canada,” said BYU coach Lee Cummard. “She's going to have a great year.”

The Cougars came into Gibbs freshman year ranked 12th in the Big 12 preseason poll. In the 2025-2026 year, BYU is ranked 10th in the 16-team conference, behind familiar consistent women’s basketball juggernauts TCU, Baylor and Oklahoma State.

With the departure of previous head coach Amber Whiting in March this year, Gibb seems completely bought in with Cummard.

“We had a good relationship already, I was excited because he’s a great guy and held me to a great standard,” said Gibb. “[He] showed me what my potential can be… a coach that is going to push me to be the best version of myself.”

Cummard and Gibb already have a relationship because Cummard has been on the staff for the previous six years, making it a much more seamless transition.

“We have a team of hard workers,” said Gibb. “He holds us to a high standard, he wants us to be great and we want to be great.”

Gibb looks to help the Cougars improve on their 2024-2025 season record of 13-17 and 4-14 in the Big 12.

One theme from the BYU offseason has been how bought in each player is, and how close this group has become.

“We have such a fun group of girls,” said Gibb. “We have a bunch of girls who truly care about each other and are willing to work hard and fight for each other.”

BYU has a relatively easy preseason schedule, meaning starting the season strong is important especially in a competitive conference like the Big 12.

Gibb looks to get the Cougars on track when they take on Western Colorado on Oct. 28 in an exhibition game.
