BYU team captain, and starting center, Connor Pay has announced that he suffered a fractured foot during the team’s 34-28 win over Baylor on Saturday.
The injury happened early in the game and he was carted off the field. Pay was seen with crutches and wearing a boot on his left foot when he returned to the sideline.
Pay said he suffered a fracture of the fifth metatarsal in his left foot, an injury he is familiar with. While speaking with the “Locked on Cougars” podcast, Pay said, "It's something I've done before, on my other foot, in high school. So I know the surgery and the recovery process very well; I'm comfortable with it."
Pay says that he will have surgery this week to get a screw put in his foot.
“A six-week recovery is the goal,” Pay says.
If Pay can achieve his recovery time goal, that would put his return around one of BYU’s biggest games of the season when the Cougars travel north to Salt Lake City to take on their heated rival, Utah.
"I'm going to do everything I can to make sure I'm back for that Utah game," Pay said.
In the meantime, the Cougars will play at least three games without their star center. Pay has helped anchor a BYU offensive line that has only given up five sacks this season and the team is hoping it can replace his toughness and production while he is out.
