BYU survives Love’s late flurry, upsets No. 19 Arizona
TUCSON, Ariz. — Throughout Arizona star guard Caleb Love’s college career, he has been the definition of a “streaky scorer” —the kind of player who can go ice cold for long stretches but, when he finds his rhythm, becomes nearly unstoppable.
Through 35 minutes, he was stuck in a slump, scoring 13 points on 4-of-13 shooting. Yet, despite Love’s struggles, Arizona managed to stay within striking distance, trailing by just one, 80-79, as they came out of the TV timeout.
Then, as he’s done so many times before, Love flipped the switch.
In the final 4:37, he poured in 13 points and sinking two clutch free throws with 13 seconds left to put Arizona up 95-94 — capping a rally after trailing by four with just a minute to go.
It looked like Arizona had stolen one.
But with 2.6 seconds left, everything came down to a whistle.
Arizona’s Trey Townsend was called for a foul as BYU’s Richie Saunders attacked the rim, a decision that left the Arizona bench and fans in disbelief.
Saunders remained composed at the free-throw line, knocking down both attempts to give BYU the lead and ultimately secure a 96-95 victory for the Cougars.
Now, BYU turns its focus to another road test, heading to Tempe to take on Arizona State on Wednesday in search of another résumé-boosting win.
